“Building a limited edition Dallara Stradale for our friends at Club Italia was an honour. Club Italia has been nurturing the worldwide image of Italian motoring since its founding. Being a part of that with our own car is a source of immense pride. It’s a project into which we’ve poured everything learnt from racing and from working alongside our clients”.
Giampaolo Dallara
“This project stemmed from a desire to re-experience the buzz of a certain May afternoon. In the early 1990s, a group of gentlemen dressed in blazers and green ties gathered in a villa in the hills outside Turin. They were admiring a row of beautiful cars, each a Delta Integrale Evoluzione, all the same, all in Lancia dark blue with red leather interiors. Each man then got behind the wheel of his car, pressed the start button and gifted himself a few hours of pure driving pleasure. The side panels sported enamelled badges with an Italian tricolour trim enclosing the stylized nose of a 250 Testarossa. I was incredibly lucky to experience that afternoon. I will never forget it.
After the Delta came the Ducati Monster, Fiat Barchetta, Bianchi bicycles, the Alfa Romeo 4C and the Ducati Scrambler: blue, red, and green, with Italian tricolour trims, the emblematic elements of Club Italia. For many members, these glorious colours have accompanied the thrill of powering across the countryside hills and Alpine passes of Italy and Europe, unique driving experiences sometimes shared with friends, sometimes alone. Yet always in a quest for that perfect driving line which sends shivers down the spine.
Each generation’s mission is to innovate, and pay homage to preceding generations. For almost 30 years, Club Italia has been working alongside Italian car and motorcycle manufacturers to create exclusive editions of vehicles that represent motoring excellence, breathing life into a uniquely elegant Club Italia style. So, our members asked themselves: which 2020 car represents Italian technological excellence and shares our philosophy of driving pleasure?
The answer came from a company rooted in Italy’s Emilia region. Renowned engineer Giampaolo Dallara has 50 years’ experience in racing car design. More recently, he decided to create the first road car to bear his name. His philosophy is grounded in a quest for lightness. It draws on the latest composite material-making techniques and seeks to maximise aerodynamic downforce: a philosophy that targets both performance and pure driving enjoyment. The result? Uncompromising design that takes its cue from racing success, a design that – in the best tradition – merges form and function.
Between Club Italia and the company from Varano de’ Melegari, it was love at first sight: so much so that Giampaolo Dallara himself was personally involved in the development of our limited edition, of which only 10 are expected to be built. Together, Dallara and Club Italia embarked on a journey of creative collaboration. Small but significant indicators of that teamwork include hand-painted badges on the side panels instead of the usual enamelled ones. Why? To reduce aerodynamic drag of course! The real eye-catcher is the matt dark blue carbon-look bodywork, proof that even this most technical of materials can embody the aesthetic precepts of Club Italia to perfection. At the handover ceremony, the invitees were stunned as that carbon fibre glinted in the sun.
And, as I observed the lined up cars, there in Varano in front of the Dallara Academy, I felt the same buzz I’d experienced that afternoon in Turin 30 years earlier… and the satisfaction of having written a new chapter of that same marvellous book”. (s.m.)
